10. Don’t Play Every Hand
Most new players make the mistake of playing! You will need to learn to control yourself while playing, and use your head when deciding what hands to play. I love a drunk at the tables. Not for their sparkling conversation skills, or enchanting scent. No I like a drunk at the table because I like their money. They get sloppier, and louder with every hand, so they make all kinds of stupid mistakes, like going into the hand with nothing, bluffing when there isn’t a decent reason to, and they get distracted and go on tilt much easier.

When you bluff, you must be confident, and make your opponent question their hand. If one of your opponents always plays to the showdown, don’t try to bluff him out. Bluffing will only work on certain players in certain positions, and the better you are at identifying those situations, the more successful your bluffing will be.
7. Don’t always go to the Showdown
Beginners are notorious for throwing their money away. Some seem to think that if they keep putting money in the pot their cards will magically become the winning hand. This is simply not the case. Everyone makes mistakes while playing poker, even the pros, but knowing when to fold is a talent that will never be wasted. You should be comfortable with losing a tiny bit of your stack here and there, if it saves you from making a major mistake by being lured into placing a significant portion of your chips into the pot with pocket twos. Always keep in mind what you have already placed in the pot in comparison to your next bet.
6. If you know you’ve lost the hand, Don’t keep betting.
Sometimes it’s a benefit to find out how a certain opponent played a hand, and in that case it’s probably worth it to toss in a few chips to see their hand. This will more often than not just end up costing you more money than it had to. If you feel like you are going to lose, or are going to be bullied into placing an exorbitant amount of money into the pot just cut your losses, and fold your hand. If you feel that your opponent actually has the hand they are representing they have, why would you want to increase their stack of chips and lower yours? Will losing even more money make you feel better for losing the hand? No? Then be glad you had the sense to back out, when you did.
5. Don’t Tilt!
Poker is a game of logical thinking, odds, and carefully chosen actions. If you go on “tilt” and start playing for revenge, or start off playing in the wrong mindset, you can kiss your cash goodbye. This is probably one of the most important hold’em poker tips for beginners. More experienced players will pick up on this right away, and bait you into situations where you have no real hope for recovery. If your emotions start to overwhelm you, excuse yourself from the table for a few hands.
4. Pay attention to what’s on the table.
When you first start playing, you will have a hard enough time paying attention to your own hand. Once you have a good handle on knowing what cards you have in your hand, you can then start paying more attention to the possibilities presented by the cards on the table. You will want to be aware of any possibilities that are on the table, and figure out if you have the best hand. Your opponents will likely be doing the same amount of analyzing, so you should do the same to level the playing field.

Just because you may have folded your hand, doesn’t mean that you can relax.When you aren’t participating in a hand, and even while you are, you should be watching the others carefully. Studying your opponents will let you make educated guesses as to their next move. Once you realize one player always calls in a certain position, another will fold to a re-raise, and the woman next to you always scratches her elbow when she has a monster hand, you can then use that information to your advantage later in the game to bluff and steal a pot.
